Stefan Szczesny

Stefan Szczesny (b. 1951, Munich) is a German painter, sculptor and graphic artist, widely regarded as a leading figure of the Neue Wilde movement that revived expressive, colourful figurative painting in 1980s Germany. His work draws deeply on the Mediterranean — its light, vegetation and classical motifs — and engages in ongoing dialogue with masters such as Matisse, Picasso and Léger. Since establishing a studio in Saint-Tropez, he has developed an instantly recognisable visual language of bathers, gardens, palms and still lifes, realised across painting, ceramics, sculpture and large-scale public installations.
